          HUMAN RESOURCES GENERALIST – Part Time (24 hours per week)

We are currently seeking an experienced Human Resources Generalist for a permanent, part-time position supporting our operational HR needs, including recruitment, onboarding, health and safety, policy administration, coaching and support. We operate in 3 provinces: Ontario, British Columbia and Quebec; familiarity with employment legislation in each province is preferred. This position will work approximately 24 hours per week, with flexibility to accommodate scheduling preferences subject to the needs of the business being met (i.e. the successful applicant may work 8 hours per day, 3 days per week, or shorter hours per day over 4 or 5 days per week). Our production team operates in two shifts, days and afternoons; periodic hours extending into our afternoon shift will be required.

The Human Resources Generalist provides a wide range of HR services to support business strategy, including recruitment, training, onboarding, health and safety, coaching and support, performance management and HR policy development and implementation. This role works closely with all employees to build a positive, productive and committed culture that attracts and retains high performers to achieve business results. The HR Generalist reports to the Controller with support from and access to a senior HR Consultant.

Core Duties                            

Staffing, Onboarding and Training
  • Assess current and projected staffing needs (hourly and salaried) to meet business needs
  • Recruit qualified, motivated candidates who demonstrate Heritage’s core values
    • Prepare job postings, source and manage temporary employment agencies as needed, interview candidates, check references, prepare job offers / employment contracts
  • Develop and implement an effective onboarding and training program tailored to each role
    • Work closely with supervisors to ensure new hires are successfully onboarded and thoroughly trained in all aspects of their role, including health and safety, job duties, company procedures and protocols
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the training provided to support high performance; provide support and coaching to Supervisors where warranted to ensure training is effective
  • Continually assess and strengthen the company’s recruitment, onboarding and training practices
  • Pursue government grants wherever possible to offset hiring and training costs
Payroll, Compensation and Benefits, Employee Records
  • Supported by the Controller, administer Heritage’s payroll, compensation and benefits programs, ensuring employees are paid accurately and on time and benefits records are well maintained
  • Ensure all employee records are accurate and up to date, including collecting and protecting the confidentiality of required personal information, tracking and monitoring attendance, sick time, vacation time, bereavement leave and attendance
Performance Management
  • Support Heritage’s Performance Management program, including:
    • Creating or updating job descriptions with clear performance objectives for each role
    • Implementing the Performance Assessment process, and supporting supervisors in providing meaningful feedback and coaching
    • Assisting supervisors in addressing performance issues, helping identify and remove obstacles to performance
    • Provide individual employee coaching and counselling as required to support high performance and retention
  • Administer Heritage’s fair progressive discipline policy in a supportive manner
HR Policies and Procedures
  • Contribute to the development of, implement and enforce comprehensive HR policies that meet legislative requirements in the provinces in which the Company operates and reflect the company’s desired culture and business practices
  • Provide training and support to Supervisors and staff to ensure thorough understanding of HR policies and procedure
  • Ensure the company complies with applicable legislative requirements in all applicable provinces

Required Skills and Attributes                                                          Skills and Experience Attributes
  • Post-secondary degree with completion of professional courses in Human Resources
  • Certified Human Resources Professional designation (achieved or in progress) preferred
  • Min 5 years’ experience in Human Resources in generalist positions in a manufacturing environment; food manufacturing is preferred
  • Strong knowledge of HR legislative requirements in Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia
  • Excellent planning, organization and execution skills

  • Meets deadlines; willing to work additional hours as needed during peak periods
