Job Description

Violence Against Women Services Elgin County supports women who are facing harm and abuse in their relationships and their children too.  Help is immediate, respectful, and compassionate. Each year over 2,000 people find the help they seek. 

 24-Hour Crisis Services are delivered through our Community Help Line, Drop-In Support, and Emergency Shelter to offer immediate help right when it’s needed most.  No appointment is needed.

 We also offer Community Based Care Outreach & Counselling Services for women who have been abused so you don’t have to leave to talk about it.  We offer support for women who have experienced sexual assault; women experiencing abuse; women seeking support to obtain a new home; women navigating family court, and children who have witnessed abuse.

 We are currently hiring PART TIME Emergency Shelter Crisis Counsellors to join our mighty team in our 24-Hour Crisis Services.

 Work is in person 24 to 30 hours a week at our 24-hour location in St. Thomas. 

 Responsibilities include:   

  • Creating and holding the space for each person to be heard and believed
  • Providing crisis support
  • Facilitating risk mitigation through dynamic risk assessment and safety planning
  • Offering practical information to assist each woman in their pursuit of safety from harm
  • Ensuring support occurs in a warm and welcoming setting

Qualifications needed for this opportunity include a strong commitment to and alignment with the vision, mission, values, and service framework of the agency. A steadfast and nimble spirit is also necessary to be comfortable with and remain grounded on days when things go differently than planned. You will also require: 

  • Sound analysis of the societal issue of gender based violence including its impact on women and children.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills evident in person, on the phone, and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability in dynamic risk assessment, safety planning, & crisis support.
  • Curiosity, introspection, and openness to learning and growth.
  • Appropriate combination of experience and post-secondary education.
  • Work experience in a residential setting and/or related social service is preferred.
  • Proficiency in office computer programs (Word, Outlook, Excel)
  • Ability to work night shifts, days, afternoons, and weekends necessary to support 24 hour service delivery.

You will also need to be able to lift 30lbs, obtain a current and clear Criminal Reference Check and Vulnerable Persons Screen and current CPR/First Aid certification, and have access to reliable transportation.
