Job Description

The Health and Safety Specialist will champion the development and implementation of workplace health and safety initiatives to ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and governmental regulatory requirements; promote a culture of workplace health and safety at all Board sites; design, deliver and maintain records of all workplace training; provide timely and accurate advice regarding health and safety issues to all stakeholders; analyze and provide support for all workplace incidents and investigations; anticipate, evaluate and provide corrective strategies for workplace hazards; and participate in the planning and implementation of The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace.  The Health and Safety Specialist will also provide expert guidance and leadership to the Board’s Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), including sub-committees.

The successful candidate will work as an integral member of the Plant and Human Resources departments.  This full-time (1.0 FTE) position will commence on or about September 1, 2018.  

The successful candidate will possess the following skills and qualifications:

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, or equivalent;  a professional designation (CRSP, CSP, ROH, CIH) is preferred;
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in the development and implementation of health and safety programs within a unionized environment;
  • Thorough knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations, with an understanding of the role of Health and Safety in the education sector;
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the WSIB process;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to promote positive relationships with all stakeholders;
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work both independently and as an effective team member;
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy with the ability to prioritize, multi-task and maintain strict confidentiality;
  • Advanced computer skills (including Microsoft Office 365);
  • Valid driver’s licence and access to reliable transportation; travel to worksites is a requirement.
